| Abstract | Salt and waterlogging tolerant plants are required for saline/low water table/discharge areas. A range of trees, shrubs and groundcovers with some commercial and/or ornamental value would be useful for these often degraded sites. Many saline/waterlogged sites are on farmland but others are along roadsides and in parks and gardens in rural and coastal towns. Plants were selected on the basis of their commercial or ornamental value, or their natural habitats. Establishment of seedlings is usually the most critical phase and so seedlings were examined under control (scheme water) or saline drained, or fresh or saline waterlogged conditions. Seedlings were acclimated for 3-4 weeks before exposure to non-saline or saline conditions. Under saline conditions salt concentrations were increased incrementally at weekly intervals up to 550 mM NaCl. Ca2+ was added to solutions. For selected species equivalent seedlings were planted in field sites for comparison with pot-grown trails. A range of trees, shrubs and groundcovers showed potential for saline/waterlogged sites. |
