Abstract The Andean Altiplano of Chile lies between 18 degrees and 27 degrees S. This area is under the influence of a tropical climatic regime characterizated by precipitation that occurs mainly in the summer, and reach about 80 mm annually. This paper describes species richness and the phytogeographic relationships of flora and vegetation of Collaguasi-Salar de Coposa area (20 degrees 38' (21 degrees 05' S)-68 degrees 39' W), Region de Tarapaca (I), Provincia of Iquique, Chile. Ninety seven native vascular species, seven endemic to Chile were found. Astragalus crypticus is new for the flora of Chile. New northern or southern limits for 30 species are presented. Two endangered species grow in the Collaguasi area: Azorella compacta and Polylepis tarapacana. Predominant Raunkiaer's life forms were hemicryptophytes (mainly caespitose), chamaephytes and nanophanerophytes. The zonal vegetation is represented by
